Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus was born on 3 June 2011 in Bursa, Turkey, and took up chess at six after an introduction from his kindergarten teacher. His climb through the youth ranks was immediate: he won the European U-8 Championship in 2019 with a perfect 8/8 score, and by 2022 had become Turkey's youngest-ever International Master at age 11. He was awarded the grandmaster title in April 2024 at 12 years, 9 months and 29 days — the fourth-youngest GM in history, behind only Abhimanyu Mishra, Sergey Karjakin and Gukesh Dommaraju.
The rating milestones kept falling after the GM title. In May 2024 he reached 2569, breaking a record for youngest player at that rating that Judit Polgar had held for 35 years, and by October 2024 he had become the youngest player in history to cross a FIDE rating of 2600, at 13 years, 3 months and 28 days. He made his Chess Olympiad debut that September in Budapest, scoring 8/11 on board three for a 12th-placed Turkish team.
Erdogmus made his debut in the elite Tata Steel Masters in January 2026, its youngest-ever competitor, and tied for sixth on 7/13. A few months later, in May 2026, he became the youngest player ever to reach a FIDE rating of 2700, faced Magnus Carlsen at the TePe Sigeman & Co tournament, and tied for third. He entered the world's top 100 in July 2025 at age 14, the second-youngest player ever to do so after Polgar.
