Nodirbek Abdusattorov
Biography
Nodirbek Abdusattorov was born on 18 September 2004 in Tashkent, and his early career moved at a startling pace even by prodigy standards: he won the Under-8 World Youth Championship in Maribor in 2012, had cracked FIDE's world top-100 juniors by age 11, and was beating grandmasters before his tenth birthday. He was awarded the grandmaster title in April 2018 at 13 years, 1 month and 11 days old, among the youngest players ever to reach the title at the time.
His breakthrough came in Warsaw in December 2021, where, at 17 years and 3 months old and ranked outside the world's top 100, he won the World Rapid Chess Championship after tying for first on 9½/13 and beating Ian Nepomniachtchi in a tiebreak play-off along the way, defeating both Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana during the event. The result made him the youngest world champion in any recognised time format up to that point.
Abdusattorov anchored board one for Uzbekistan's gold medal-winning team at the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai, scoring 7 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss for an individual silver medal, and returned on board one as Uzbekistan took team bronze at the 2024 Olympiad in Budapest. He has since become a fixture near the top of the classical circuit, with repeated podium finishes at the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee and tournament wins in Sharjah, Prague and London, while remaining one of the world's strongest rapid and blitz players — he was runner-up to Carlsen at the 2025 World Blitz Championship.
