Jorden Van Foreest
Biography
Jorden Van Foreest was born on 30 April 1999 in Utrecht and raised in Groningen in one of Dutch chess's best-known families; his brother Lucas is also a grandmaster. He won the European U14 Chess Championship in 2013 with 7.5/9, took the International Master title in 2014 at 15, and completed his grandmaster norms in 2015 before FIDE formally awarded the GM title in 2016 — the same year he won his first Dutch Chess Championship, on 5.5/7.
As a junior he twice reached the top five at the World Junior Chess Championship, finishing sixth in 2015 (8/13) and fifth in 2017 (8/11). In 2019 he tied for the Dutch title on 5/7 but lost the playoff to his brother Lucas. His breakthrough came at the 2021 Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee, where he tied for first with Anish Giri on 8.5/13 and won an armageddon tiebreak to become the first Dutch player to win the event since Jan Timman in 1985, pushing his rating above 2700 for the first time. He had finished fourth in the same tournament the year before, on 7/13.
Van Foreest added a second Dutch championship in 2025 and reached his career-peak FIDE rating of 2736 in April 2026. He finished third at the 2026 Tata Steel Masters with 7.5/13, and defeated Magnus Carlsen at the TePe Sigeman & Co tournament that May.
