Biography

Ian Nepomniachtchi is a Russian grandmaster, born 14 July 1990 and awarded the GM title in 2007. He built a reputation over the following decade as one of the strongest players never to hold the world title, winning the Russian Chess Championship Superfinal in 2010 and 2020 and the European Individual Championship in 2010, while repeatedly finishing among the top finishers at the Aeroflot Open, which he won in 2008, 2015, 2025 and 2026.

Nepomniachtchi won the Candidates Tournament in 2020/21 and again in 2022, becoming the first player to win consecutive Candidates cycles since the format was restored, and reached a career-high FIDE rating of 2795 in March 2023. In his first title match, held in Dubai in 2021, he lost to Magnus Carlsen 7½–3½. In 2023 he challenged Ding Liren for the vacant world championship, drawing the classical portion of the match 7–7 before losing on rapid tiebreaks, 9½–8½ — twice a challenger, and twice denied the title.

With the Russian national team he won World Team Championship gold in Antalya (2013) and Astana (2019), and took team bronze and an individual silver medal on board four at the 2016 Chess Olympiad in Baku. Russia's national teams have been suspended from FIDE team competitions since 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine, and Nepomniachtchi has since competed only as an individual player in top events.
